Most companies are buying AI faster than they are deciding what they actually want to build with it. New tools arrive, automation expands, and reliance on external AI services grows almost by default.
The more strategic question is different: does your AI investment create lasting capability and value inside your company — or mainly deepen your dependence on systems owned by someone else?
Intro: AI discussions tend to revolve around models, agents, cloud platforms and new features. From an owner’s or executive’s perspective, however, the more important question is what remains inside the company five years from now.
Once AI starts touching company knowledge, workflows, customer relationships and decision-making, this is no longer just a software choice. It becomes a question of who controls the company’s future AI capability.
